Tying The Mercury Blood Midge With Pat Dorsey

The Mercury Blood Midge, tied by Blue Quill's Head Guide Pat Dorsey, is one of our favorite attractor patterns to use on winter nymph rigs. This pattern imitates a red midge larva – also called a blood midge – that's prominent in Colorado's tailwater fisheries. Stock up your fly boxes with some Mercury Blood Midges you can purchase in our online store, or purchase the ingredients to tie your own.

RECIPE:

Hook: TMC 200 R, Size 18-22

Thread: UNI 8/0, Red

Bead: Glass, extra small, clear/mercury

Rib: UTC wire, gold

Collar: Peacock herl
